Hydraulic hammers take rock apart by overcoming its compressive strength. Even large hydraulic hammers begin to drastically reduce in performance above 15,000 PSI compressive strength, hurting your ability to deliver results to the customer and hurts your profit. Many rock formations exceed 35,000 PSI compressive strength, with confined rock 3-5x harder than surface rock.
Splitters EXCEL in rock
15,000 - 70,000 PSI +
Regulations are quickly becoming more restrictive on blasting. Whether you're working in suburbs or quarries, it's common to find limitations on blasting. From complete bans to charge restrictions that yield low production rates, these restrictions can seriously affect projects. If rock is hard, you're stuck relying on slow and ineffective hammers.
Splitters cause no ground
tremors / explosions - no restrictions.
As areas become developed, the hardest rock is often left behind, but the value of the property increases drastically. This leads to high demand to build on the hard rock sites. To continue development, rock must be excavated in sensitive areas, often close to existing utilities or foundations. Hammers shaking the ground, unpredictable chemicals, and blasting are all sources of liability and often unusable.
Splitters easily and safely dismantle rock from along existing infrastructure.
"Get a bigger hammer" often comes with jobsite size restrictions - whether it be roadway access, total site space, or sensitive existing property features (like driveways and lawns).
Splitters range from handheld
to 5-40 ton excavator mounted.
Whether it's near windows, siding, roadways, or other jobsite activities, fly rock poses a serious safety and liability concern. Hard rock results in flying chips that can destroy adjacent property and disrupt surrounding jobsite activities.
Splitters do not cause fly rock.
The splitting process with Darda hydraulic splitters is simply faster than many methods in hard confined rock. The simple, repeatable, mechanical process allows you to count on steady production rates that are more profitable than other methods.
Splitters offer high production rates.
Splitters, like many methods of rock excavation and concrete demolition, require the installation of drill holes. Darda splitters often require the fewest number of drill holes. Holes range from 1.25" to 3" and 12" to 36" depth, depending on splitter model.
Once a drill pattern has been installed, simply insert the wedgeset of the splitter and cycle the tool. The wedge travels down between two counterwedges, exerting extreme force on the rock. Rock will often break in large blocks for fast production rates.
Although some situations may benefit from shaking split rock loose with a small hammer, the prying action of a reinforced rock ripper attachment, pry-bar, or reinforced bucket tend to yield the fastest results for extraction.
From 2 to 20,000 cubic yards, splitters are trusted for a wide range of construction based rock excavation projects. Whether it be additions, foundations, spread footings, elevator shafts, trenching, or mass rock excavation, we deliver the ideal splitting package to your site.
The round shape of large boulders often makes hammers completely ineffective at reducing them. Splitters deconstruct these rocks with ease, and keep your main activities running on schedule.
Splitters are incredibly effective in the dimensional stone industry and, as quarries are now faced with limitations or bans on blasting, even the aggregate industries. For splitting directly from the face or reducing oversize shot rock, splitters are an asset.
From small tunnels to large, splitting is an excellent method for both primary face work and ancillary work such as cleaning along the invert, peeling rock from around preinstalled pillars, and ventilation / crossover tubes. For pipe jacking, splitters can make quick work compared to chipping guns and jackhammers.
Both reinforced and plain concrete are quickly and easily dismantled with splitters. Ranging from sidewalks to heavily reinforced airport taxiways and equipment pads, splitters can deliver the perfect balance of precision and production while minimizing microfractures in the surrounding structures.
For residential work around existing homes or finished landscapes, our customers tend to use Darda's handheld models. Capable of being operated without any support equipment with ease, or with the assistance of small mini excavators, the handheld splitters deliver unparalleled production in these situations.
